Informations
Catfish (Silurus glanis) is a large species of freshwater fish of the genus Silurus, a native of Eastern Europe, around the Baltic and Caspian Seas and Asia.
This once endemic fish of the Rhine and the Danube basin is quoted in the Natural History of Buffon published in the nineteenth century. It has recently spread throughout Europe in the canals and rivers following the interconnection of watersheds and networks and in many lakes, ponds and gravel pits after many introductions by man for fishing leisure. This is one of six species of invasive fish [ref. required] in Europe.
Do not confuse an invasive species, which comes from elsewhere, with an invasive species whose reproductive potential is important but can be a native species.
